Daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
You’ve probably known someone that’s given a child an interesting name, though they’re typically just normal names that are spelled a bit uniquely. Then, you’ve seen celebrities that give their children some of the strangest names that you’ve ever heard. There are ones that include Pilot Inspektor (Jason Lee) and Blue Ivy (Beyonce and Jay-Z), and right up there among them is Apple Martin, the daughter of actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.
Paltrow had previously been in a relationship with the likes of actors Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck, which were very highly publicized. Then in October 2002, Paltrow would be backstage for one of Coldplay’s concerts where she met Martin for the first time. The two started dating almost immediately, and were married the next year, tying the knot on December 5, 2003.
Soon into their marriage, the two focused on having children. They had a son named Moses (named after one of Martin’s songs) in 2006, but first came Apple, who was born on May 14, 2004. The name of the new child immediately captured headlines, and Paltrow had talked about the name at length with reporters for several years.
Just a couple of months after Apple was born, Paltrow had interviewed with legendary talk show host Oprah Winfrey. In the interview, Paltrow said it was Martin’s idea to name their daughter. “Her daddy said if it’s a girl, I think her name should be Apple,” she said. “It sounded so sweet and it conjured such a lovely picture for me - you know, apples are so sweet and they’re wholesome and it’s biblical - and I just thought it sounded so lovely and clean. And I just thought, ‘Perfect!.'"
Paltrow would go on to explain that there were immediately critics of her new daughter’s name. “And then she was born, and it became an international outrage. Which I found surprising because there are people named Rose or Lily or Ivy or June..or lots of pretty nouns!” She also said that Apple would grow up to ask about her name, to which she tells her to ask her father.
After the headlines of Apple’s name had cooled down, the family was back in the news when she was just nine years old. Paltrow had announced that she and Martin were separating, and officially divorced in July 2016. Since then, Paltrow has been in a relationship with producer Brad Falchuk, and were married in 2018. As for Martin, he’s now dating “Fifty Shades of Gray” star Dakota Johnson.
Both parents remain very much a big part of Apple’s life, saying that the split between them wasn’t a messy one. “We actually have a really strong friendship and we laugh and we have fun,” Paltrow said of her ex-husband. “But there are times when it’s really difficult and things happen and you’re like, ‘I’m sure he doesn’t want to hang out with me and I don’t want to hang out with him.’ But for the sake of the kids you do it, but you also don’t do it all tense.”
Having already had experienced being talked about from the moment she was born, Apple is still seen frequently with her parents out in public. Now 14 years old, it’s hard to imagine that the girl that garnered attention for her name is already a teenager. If that isn’t enough to make you feel old, we’re not quite sure what will.
When talking about raising her daughter, Paltrow said that “Women are so powerful and so capable and to have it inferred that you have to generate yourself in any way to be likeable is abhorrent to me,” adding that “With my daughter I try to find a balance of being an example for her as a woman who works and tried not to go out in public (scantily dressed). I am her mom but at the same time I want her to express herself. Sometimes it is hard when she is wearing something really, really short and a lot of makeup and I have to resist the instinct as I want her to experiment and find her own identity.”
Since she’s still only 14, Apple has a lot of time to decide what she wants to do with her career. As of right now, though, it looks like she might be following in her father’s footsteps. He’s already been teaching her how to play the piano and guitar, even learning to play some songs by The Beatles. Even if Paltrow and Martin have split, the two have said “We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been.”
Paltrow added onto that statement, saying “It’s like we are still a family, but not a couple. I think we are better as friends than we were together. We are very close and supportive of one another...I feel lucky because Chris has been willing to push himself for the sake of the kids and help me co-create this new family.”
