Growing up in the entertainment industry, there’s always an option of whether or not you want to get into acting yourself. Even then, if you want to, you still have to be good enough to make it big. That was the case for Blake Lively, who achieved success at a young age and has kept it going for more than a decade.
Lively was born in Los Angeles on August 25, 1987, to a mother that had worked as a talent scout and her father as an actor. Lively excelled as a student while her older brother was breaking into acting, landing himself an agent.
While growing up, Lively said that she struggled with her own self-esteem. “I was kind of quiet and shy,” she explained. “I had problems in high school with some of the others girls and, because I was tall, I felt insecure about standing out in a crowd when I really just wanted to disappear and be alone. So I was kind of withdrawn and I spent a lot of time by myself and lost in my own thoughts.”
It was acting that helped Lively develop a higher sense of self-esteem, saying that she changed into a much more outgoing person. Able to express herself, Lively knew that she wanted to make a career out of acting. She had already been featured in a small role in the film “Sandman”, but wasn’t sure until her later teenage years that she wanted to make it a full-time job.
When she was trying to break into the business, Lively said that she had to struggle through, getting into a small apartment in New York City. “My first New York apartment was really, really, really tiny. The kitchen and the closet were the same room,” she said. “I had too many cake pans that I brought from home that I had growing up that my mom gave to me.”
With that, she hoped to land roles by auditioning herself, getting some help from her older brother that used his agent to get her tape out there. It didn’t take long for Lively to start landing roles, as she was 18 when she got the job to star in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” that was based off of the famous novel. It was a sudden breakout for Lively who was well on her way to stardom.
The next few roles for Lively wouldn’t be big blockbusters, but helped her continue her career thanks to films such as “Accepted”, “Simon Says” and “Elvis and Anabelle”. Even with “Sisterhood” being a very high-profile film, the biggest break for Lively would come when she was cast as the lead star on the CW series “Gossip Girl”. On the show, Lively played Serena van der Woodsen, and the popular series would run for six seasons, becoming one of the more talked about shows on television.
Lively would continue to appear in films outside of “Gossip Girl” while it was still on the air, including the superhero film “Green Lantern” in which she appeared opposite future-husband Ryan Reynolds. The movie, despite having a large budget, was seen as a flop both commercially and critically. Still, that didn’t hurt either of their careers or personal lives too badly as they’d move on.
It was a big rebound for Lively who appeared in the 2012 film “Savages” that was met more positively by critics. Since then, she’s starred in the critically acclaimed “The Shallows” and “The Age of Adaline”. Because she’s been around for so long as a big star in Hollywood, it might seem like Lively should be older, but she’s still only 31 years old.
Coming up in the future, Lively still has plenty of work left to be done. Later this year, she’ll be starring in the film “A Simple Favor” that has “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig at the helm, and she’s also signed on to have to the lead role in “The Rhythm Section”. With that in mind, Lively is just getting started with her career, and has a busy life at home with her two daughters that she’s had with husband Ryan Reynolds.
Not only that, but she’s also running her own website that contains a monthly magazine with a business attached and a vlog. “It’s been a dream of mine to get this project off the ground,” she’s said. Much of the focus on her site has focused on food and lifestyle, which are passion projects that’s she’s had, and she wants to keep growing her family.
“After ‘Gossip Girl’ ended, I really wanted to spend time doing something else with my life other than acting,” she said. “I’ve wanted to enjoy my time with Ryan and focusing on other interests that I have. I’ve always been interested in food and handicrafts, and this website is something I’ve been working on with a great team of people for the last two years.”
