Most people would sacrifice a lot to have a career in modeling or acting, especially if it came with sustained success. In the case of Brooke Shields, she’s been enjoying a long career in both, and is still going 40 years after making her debut. The former child actor/model is still getting plenty of work these days, and remains as one of the most recognizable faces in pop culture that’s come a long way during her career.

Shields was born on May 31, 1965 in Manhattan, New York to her mother Teri that had been a model herself and a father that worked in business. Shortly after Shields was born, her parents would split and she’d spent most of her childhood with her mother. It didn’t take long for Teri to try and get Shields into the entertainment industry, saying that she wanted her to become a model or actress and had her take lessons in dance and music.

Before celebrating her first birthday, Shields was already appearing on advertisements, and would continue to land modeling jobs throughout her childhood. Then, when she was 12 years old, Shields would get her first acting role when she starred in the film “Pretty Baby” that set her up for success. Shields quickly became a teen idol, and the youngest model ever on a Vogue cover, and would keep appearing in commercials for the likes of Calvin Klein.

Following that first major role, Shields would appear in several 1970s films such as “Tilt”, “Wanda Nevada” and “King of the Gypsies”. The role that really stood out early in her career, however, came in 1980 when she starred in “The Blue Lagoon” with Christopher Atkins. The film received a lot of criticism for showing such mature content with the teenage stars, and the Golden Raspberry Awards even gave the then-15 year old the award for Worst Actress.

Despite the notions that many had about the film, Shields was making money hand over first from her acting career thanks to the modeling on the side. At the time, she made a whopping $300,000 from “The Blue Lagoon” and saw her asking price inflate to a half million. The rest of the 1980s saw Shields star in films such as “Endless Love”, “Sahara” and “Speed Zone”, but she continued to be criticized as an actress.

Not only was Shields excelling in her career financially, but she was also a bright student. After graduating from high school, Shields would attend the prestigious Princeton University where she received her Bachelor’s in French Literature in 1987. She’d be an honors student in college, showcasing that she was supremely talented in just about anything that she ventured into.

Opinions would start to change on Shields’s acting talent in the 1990s after making cameos in several shows and starring in TV movies. Her big screen career hadn’t quite rebounded, but she landed a sitcom in 1996 called “Suddenly Susan” that saw her playing the leading role. The series would last for nearly 100 episodes, earning her two Golden Globe nominations in the process.

“Suddenly Susan” came to an end in 2000, and she spent the first half of the decade appearing on shows that included “That 70s Show”, “Just Shoot Me!” and “Nip/Tuck” to name a few, starring in the late 2000s series “Lipstick Jungle”. Some of the movies she added to her resume during this time were films such as “Our Italian Husband” and “The Midnight Meat Train”.

In recent years, we haven’t seen too much of Shields on the big screen, as her roles in the past few years have come via voiceover work. The last time that Shields was in a film was in 2013’s “The Hot Flashes”, which followed other recent roles such as “Chalet Girl” and “Furry Vengeance”. She’s continued to do work on television, appearing in several TV movies, as well as having recurring roles on shows such as “Jane the Virgin” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in addition to cameos on “Scream Queens and “Nightcap”, while continuing to lend her voice to the animated series “Mr. Pickles”.

Now 53 years old, Shields is focused on raising her two daughters that she’s had with husband Chris Henchy, whom she married in 2001. Before that, Shields was in a relationship with tennis legend Andre Agassi from 1993 to 1999, with the last two years being in marriage. Being a mother is the most important thing for Shields right now, who says that it’s “one of the purest joys that I have. After a strained relationship with her mother, Shields isn’t going to try to push her daughters into stardom the way that she was all those years ago.

When looking back at what she’s accomplished, Shields says that she got through fame as a child better than many others have. “Ultimately, I do think my character allowed me to survive,” she said. “Things happened for some kind of a reason that I think was bigger than I am...The things I can take credit for are the things that are happening in my life now, and the fact that I did not become a statistic.” As for her future, Shields wants to continue working as she feels there’s still untapped potential. “I don’t feel I’ve done enough,” she said. “Let’s face it, the acting in ‘The Blue Lagoon’ wasn’t exactly great.”
