Modeling has been a profession for ages, but the term supermodel is something that’s relatively new. There are a lot of people that differ in opinion on who the first supermodel in the industry, was, but one that many make a case for is Cheryl Tiegs. Like many other supermodels that have achieved fame, Tiegs has gone on to have a nice career outside of the profession that’s made her relevant for more than 40 years.

Tiegs was born on September 25, 1947 in the small town of Breckenridge, Minnesota where her father had been working a blue collar job. During the time that she spent in Minnesota, Tiegs would constantly be spending time at her grandparents’ farm. “That influenced me for the rest of my life,” she said. “There were fields of corn and wheat; there was a barn with cows, pigs and hay...Today, whenever I travel too much of I’m too much in the public eye, all I want to do is put on my hiking boots and get my feet on the ground...I think that’s stayed with me, and I think that’s important.”

When she was just four years old, Tiegs’s family would head out west to California, living in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra. The move ended up helping Tiegs in the long run as she was now in an area where it was easier to become famous. According to Tiegs, she had a friend that lived next door that suggested that Tiegs try her hand out at modeling. “I thought she was crazy,” Tiegs said about the time, but quickly grew to the idea. During high school, Tiegs posed for a swimsuit advertisement for a local clothing maker, and the ad would run nationally in magazines.

It wasn’t long after that that Tiegs would start to get modeling offers that kick started her career. After high school, Tiegs had enrolled at California State University in Los Angeles, but found that her budding modeling career was taking up much of her time. Tiegs was appearing on magazine covers around the United States, and dropped out of college to focus on modeling. Some of her more famous magazine covers would come on Vogue and People, helping her to become one of the more recognizable faces of the 1970s.

During the 1970s, Tiegs would appear on the Sports Illustrated yearly swimsuit issue twice, including one of the most memorable covers in 1978. At the time, Tiegs didn’t know just how popular it would be, as the photo featured her wearing a white fishnet swimsuit. “We thought it was a throwaway photo,” she said. “Who knew? But I’m very proud to be part of this evolution.”

As a result, Tiegs was being offered a lot of opportunities to become a spokeswoman for several companies that included Sears and Cover Girl, netting her millions of dollars in the process. Some of her other ventures in business include having a clothing line that sold on home television shopping and the Cambria quartz company.

On top of her modeling and business careers, Tiegs has also had a few cameos in the acting world. She’d play herself in shows such as “Moonlighting”, “Family Guy”, “Just Shoot Me!” and “Childrens Hospital”. She added acting roles in the films “The Brown Bunny” and most recently in “Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens”. In the reality TV circuit, Tiegs would become a contestant on “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2012 and is still making frequent appearances on talk shows.

Now 71 years old, Tiegs maintains a very busy schedule with three sons. Her oldest son came during her third marriage to Anthony Peck, while her two youngest were from her marriage to Rod Stryker that broke off in 2001. It’s been a long career for Tiegs, and although her modeling days are behind her, she remains an icon in the industry that will have a lasting impact for years to come.

In her own view, though, Tiegs doesn’t see herself as a fashion icon. “As a model, you have to make everything you put on look like a million bucks. But you’re not always wearing Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein,” she said. “I did a lot of catalog (work) and you have to make it look really beautiful and attractive. I was never a fashion icon. In my own personal life, I dressed very simply.”

When it becomes too much to stay in the public eye, Tiegs is happy with just spending time at home by herself. She says that she likes to sleep in until noon whenever she gets the chance, read a book and watch soap operas. For someone that thought that they’d never make it in modeling and doesn’t consider themselves to be a fashion icon or even a “beauty” that many see her as, Tiegs has had a fine career in the modeling business.
