Many actors and actresses have come from around the world to the United States to achieve fame, though some countries tend to be underrepresented. One of those countries that’s produced a surprisingly low amount of acting stars over the years is Chile, but it has produced a star from one of the biggest shows of the 2000s. That star is Cote de Pablo, who came from the South American country to become a star on “NCIS”, and has continued her acting career outside of the popular series.

De Pablo was born on November 12, 1979 in Santiago, Chile, and spent much of her childhood in her home country’s capital. When she was 10 years old, however, her family would move to the United States, where her mother started working at a television station in Miami. De Pablo knew that she wanted to be in entertainment at a young age, and started to take classes in theatre. It didn’t take long for De Pablo to find her footing, as she was only 15 years old when she started to host a handful of episodes for a Univision show. Then, she would graduate from high school and moved up to Pittsburgh, where she attended Carnegie Mellon University, earning her Bachelor’s in Musical Theater.

Like many that want to get their start in acting, de Pablo would head to New York City where she had to make ends meet by working in a restaurant. She’d also start performing on stage looking to get her big break. De Pablo would continue the standard trek to stardom that most actors take by appearing on any minor roles that she could take. Early on in her career, de Pablo would be featured in several commercials, and landed on the soap opera “All My Children”. Her other one-off roles on television would come in the form of the shows “The $treet” and “The Education of Max Bickford”.

It appeared that de Pablo was finally heading to stardom in 2004, as she landed a starring role on the Fox series “The Jury” as Marguerite Cisneros. Unfortunately, the series wouldn’t last for long. “The Jury” was cancelled by the network after the first season (10 episodes) had aired. Fox said that the show wasn’t pulling enough ratings, and de Pablo was once again looking for work. Luckily for de Pablo, she didn’t have to wait long until another series came calling, and it would be her biggest break to date.

De Pablo would send in an audition to Donald Bellisario, the producer for the CBS series “NCIS”. She was asked to come to Los Angeles to test for the part of Ziva David. The producers didn’t wait long to tell her that she landed the role, and made her debut in 2005, picking up in the third season. De Pablo played the role for eight years, appearing in nearly 200 episodes throughout the series, and also added a role in the film “The Last Rites of Ransom Pride”.

In 2013, reports started to surface that de Pablo would not be returning for the 12th season of the series, and it was later said that her character had met a grim fate while off-screen. Fans of “NCIS” were left with a lot of questions, and it was discovered that she opted not to renew her contract with CBS. “As far as my decision to leave, that’s a personal thing, and I’d rather leave it at that,” she said when finally responding to the rumors of why she left.

“The idea of leaving was not something I toyed around with for a long time. It was an overwhelmingly hard thing - at time terrifying,” she added. “I’m not of the belief that you just take off and leave fans hanging. A lot of people don’t get the privilege of going back to a set and being able to say goodbye to people. I left under my terms, and that was wonderful.”

Her departure was shrouded in a lot of mystery, and it wouldn’t be until 2016 that de Pablo revealed the real reason why she left. “Unfortunately, because of political things and the scripts not being good enough, I chose not to (continue),” she said. “I love this character. I worked eight years in crafting this character and loving her, so when I felt or I perceived the character was not being treated with the respect that she deserved, all the money in the world couldn’t make me stay.”

The support that she felt from “NCIS” fans left de Pablo feeling grateful, but there was more work to be done. Fans of de Pablo finally got to see here again in 2015 when she starred in the film “The 33”, and since then has appeared in the miniseries “The Dovekeepers” and had her most recent role in the 2016 TV movie “Prototype”. Those who enjoyed the chemistry that de Pablo had with former “NCIS” co-star Michael Weatherly are also in luck. The two are teaming up to become producers of a new show on CBS called “MIA”, which is set to debut in 2019. It’s unclear if she’s going to be a member of the cast, but her fans are certainly hoping that’s the case.

For now, de Pablo is “very happy” with the choices she’s made to this point. She’s been able to spend more time with her family and focus on herself, two things that she “couldn’t really do for a long time, so I’m blessed for that.”
