You’d be hard pressed to find someone that’s had a more interesting career path than Aubrey Graham, who’s gone from child actor to one of the most successful rappers of all-time. Throw in the fact that Graham comes from a place (Toronto, Canada) that’s not really known for rap music, and it becomes that much more interesting.
Graham was born on October 24, 1986 and his parents would divorce while he was still very young. His father would move to Tennessee while Graham and his mother stayed in Toronto, and said that growing up on the west end of Toronto wasn’t very glamorous. “We rented someone’s basement and the first floor,” he said. “I didn’t have some mansion, I grew up with a mother that was deep in debt because she wanted the best for her family.”
Graham’s mother was able to get him into private school by putting herself into that debt, allowing him to attend the Vaughan Road Academy and said that it was even rougher than school on the west end. “Being bi-racial was tougher in Forest Hill than in the west end of the city,” he said. “But I made friends as I could. I had a tough time, I definitely had a tough time.”
Showing promise as an actor, Graham had met an agent when he was 15 years old that was able to get him a spot on the teenage-focused show “Degrassi: The Next Generation”. The show was a success for Graham, who dropped out of school so that he could focus on his acting. Playing Jimmy Brooks for nearly 150 episodes, Graham was working as much as he could so that he could support her mother with more money after falling ill.
“I needed a car and clothes. I wanted to go to the club, at least buy some drinks,” he said. “And I wanted studio time. I did ask my mother and uncle for a lot, but watching my mom go through her illness and not being able to help was very tough. And when I finally did make some real money, my mother got an operation on her spine that changed her life.”
Even though his acting career seemed like it was due to take off, Graham decided to change directions and focus more on music. In 2006, he released a mixtape with his own money, calling it “Room For Improvement” and changing his stage name to Drake. Though it didn’t make big waves, it helped Drake to get his name out there and noticed by various record labels. He’d release another pair of mixtapes called “Comeback Season” and “So Far Gone” that produced more success, and record labels were lining up to sign him.
It would be Young Money Entertainment that landed Drake in 2009, and his first official album “Thank Me Later” was released the next year. The album would reach the top of the charts in both Canada and the United States, spawning hits such as “Over”, “Find Your Love” and “Miss Me”. Over the years, Drake has appeared on more than 150 songs that have reached the Billboard Hot 100, and at one point had a whopping 21 songs debut on the charts in the same week.
Drake has been a business mogul in a lot of ways, with his own OVO clothing line taking off, entrepreneurial ventures that include restaurants and radio stations, and has even shown his acting chops every now and then, including hosting “Saturday Night Live”. Talking about getting into acting, Drake said that he has “Been pretty adamant about showing range. I try to show it through different outlets, like ‘Saturday Night Live’, whogin people that I can be funny. When I get back into acting, I want to do things that make people go, ‘Wow, I didn’t expect that.’”
It was reported that Drake was worth $250 million, though he said it wasn’t quite that high. “Do you know that even if I had $250 million in the bank, I couldn’t buy half of (a yacht)?” he said. “Rappers aren’t the really rich ones. We all have nice houses with studios and cars, but you need a piece of someone’s business to be super wealthy.”
Drake always seems to be in the headlines, and sometimes it’s because he’s feuding with other rappers. Some of his more notable feuds include ones with Meek Mill (spawning “Charged Up” and “Back to Back”) as well as Pusha T.
Some of Drake’s more notable songs that have reached the top of the charts include “One Dance”, “God’s Plan” and “Nice for What”. Along the way, Drake has won three Grammy Awards, with two coming for his song “Hotline Bling” and the Best Rap Album award for “Take Care”. The 31 year old is still going strong with his music career, as he released his fifth album in 2018 called “Scorpion”, which is a follow up to his EP called “Scary Hours” that was released earlier in the year. It doesn’t seem like anything could derail Drake’s career at this point, even if he does end up on the losing side of a diss track.
