Bounty hunting seems like a glamorous job thanks to the way that they’re portrayed in the media. When you hear the title, you automatically think of high speed chases where the worst criminals are being tracked down by professionals that are ready to throw them back in jail for big money. Of course, “Star Wars” had a role in that perception of bounty hunters, but a more realistic view on the profession was given to us via Duane Chapman starting back in 2004. You know him better, however, as the man they call “Dog.”

At the time of the incident, Chapman had been married, but was sentenced to prison, resulting in his first wife leaving him. Chapman ended up spending a year and a half in prison, where he was actually considered to be a model prisoner. He was commended by the corrections staff on multiple occasions, and his time in prison convinced Chapman that he should one day become a bounty hunter, on the other side of the law.

It was found out that he got his nickname from the time when he was in a motorcycle gang in his younger years. “I didn’t name myself,” Chapman said of the Dog moniker. “In the motorcycle gang, we had a president, vice president, sergeant of arms, treasurer - you know, the basics. The brothers get together with the president and they nickname you when you became a full fledged member...I was kinder than the average outlaw biker but I still had the outlaw heart. I was very loyal to my bikership, my hood, my brothers. I was Dog Disciple and that was it. I couldn’t be Dog something else. I was that club. I was very loyal - like man’s best friend.”

Because of his sudden interest, backstory and look, A&E offered Chapman his own reality series called “Dog the Bounty Hunter”. The show detailed Chapman throughout his everyday life, from he and his family at home to his job that involved chasing down those that skipped bail. The series lasted for eight seasons on A&E, becoming one of the most successful shows in the network’s history.

After some of the family members had left the show because of personal disputes, “Dog the Bounty Hunter” came to an end in its original format on June 23, 2012. That didn’t mean that it was the end for Chapman on reality television, however. He and his wife Beth (who he’s been married to since 2006) got their own spin-off reality series called “Dog and Beth: On the Hunt”. This time around, though, it wasn’t featured on A&E, but rather CMT. The show had done fine on the network, but Beth Chapman announced that both she and Duane were leaving CMT with the rights to their reality series, which prompted the show’s final episode to air on August 22, 2015.

Following the end of “Dog and Beth: On the Hunt”, Chapman would find himself on network television for the first time, playing a fictionalized version of himself on the popular CBS series “Hawaii Five-0”. Chapman has appeared in several episodes of the series, and even had a role in the 2016 TV movie “Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens”. Unfortunately, his most recent TV movie revealed that his wife’s health was in jeopardy.

That’s because in 2017, Chapman and his wife were featured in the documentary “Dog and Beth: Fight of Their LIves” that debuted late in the year on A&E. It detailed how Beth Chapman had been diagnosed with throat cancer, and the surgery she had to undergo to have the tumor removed. Thankfully, Chapman was able to reveal after the documentary aired that Beth was cancer free. Now, Chapman is still doing his job as a bounty hunter, while also traveling around the country and giving speeches about recovery, family, faith and more.

Chapman is still bounty hunting these days at 65 years old, and doesn’t have any plans on stopping. As for his secret on how he’s able to catch bail jumpers so quickly, Chapman has a strategy. “First thing I do is I look at a picture (of the suspect),” he says. “Then you go from there: Who’s his relatives, who loves him the most, what’s his strengths, and what’s his weaknesses? He smokes - weakness. What kind? Salem. Where’s he live? 7-Eleven. Salem. ‘Ma’am, you seen this guy, buying Salem?’ ‘Oh yeah, every morning at 10:30.’ Boom.”

He’s come a long way from being a door-to-door vacuum salesman in Colorado and a former convict to being the most famous bounty hunter in the world. He knows that his background is something that he’s been trying to get away from for decades, which is why Chapman will likely never stop in his pursuit of those that skip out on bail.
