When the “Harry Potter” series of books really started to take off worldwide, it was only a matter of time before a movie series came out. Then, it was announced that the characters from the books were being brought to the big screen, and a worldwide hunt for the actors began to portray these characters. One of the three main characters was Hermione Granger, and the role would go to British youngster Emma Watson.
Watson was only 11 years old when the first “Harry Potter” film was released, and she appeared in every single one of the films that earned a total of $7.7 billion worldwide. Out of the three main actors in the series, Watson has had the most mainstream success outside of the “Potter” franchise. In the past few years, Watson has starred in movies such as “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and “The Bling Ring”, all while focusing on her college education.
Life was already good for Watson, as she was worth millions by the time she was in her 20’s. 2017 has been even kinder to the now 27 year old Watson, as she has topped the list of highest paid actresses. Before 2017, Watson had only reached the top 20 once, and that came in 2010. The biggest reason for Watson’s skyrocket to the top of the earnings list was because of her starring role in the Disney blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast”. It was reported that Watson earned a whopping $15 million from ticket sales and another $2.5 million contract for starring in the movie in the first place.
The most money that Watson made from a role prior to “Beauty and the Beast” was when she earned $3 million for the final “Harry Potter” film. It’s estimated that her latest role has brought Watson’s net worth to a staggering $91 million, which is about $40 million more than “Potter” co-star Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), but still about $10 million behind Daniel Radcliffe, who played the main character.
What’s interesting is that Watson could have had an even more lucrative year had she landed the lead role in “La La Land” that went to Emma Stone. Though she might not have been able to juggle both “La La Land” and “Beauty and the Beast”, the earnings from both films would have been astronomical for one actress. Reports said that Watson didn’t land the role because of her “demands” that included filming in London instead of Los Angeles. Though Watson said it was due to scheduling conflicts, the rumors are always swirling.
Things haven’t always been smooth sailing moneywise for Watson, however. Last year, her name popped up in the infamous Panama Papers, which showed she might have had money sent offshore to a dummy company to avoid taxes. Watson would own up to the company, saying that she set it up “for the sole purpose of protecting her anonymity and safety.” It has been nearly a year since Watson’s name came out in the Panama Papers, but no charges have been set against the actress.
With “Beauty and the Beast” being a big hit with audiences of all ages, and Watson having a wide range of popularity around the world, there’s no telling how much her net worth will be in the future. She’s certainly an A-list star at the moment, and has been for more than a decade. Watson now has a college degree to fall back on (though she won’t ever need it) and casting directors calling left and right. It’s likely that Watson will overtake Radcliffe in terms of net worth as long as she keeps it up.
Outside of acting, Watson has also done some fashion work for a couple of different companies, and has had some lucrative modeling deals for companies like Burberry. Watson also has some of her money tied up in charity, as she is an advocate for women’s rights around the world. Of famous feminists, Watson is definitely up there in terms of visibility and starts a lot of discussions amongst people.
Since she’s still only 27 years old, there is plenty of time for Watson to gather some more blockbusters under her belt. April 2017 also marked another big film, as Watson stars in “The Circle” with established actors such as Tom Hanks, John Boyega and Patton Oswalt. Right now, the sky’s the limit for Watson, who appears to have a series of lifetime achievement awards in her future.
