It’s a general consensus that The Beatles are the most successful group in rock history, and even any genre of music. The group that consisted of the four performers became legends around the world, but there had to be somebody that was producing their music. Behind the scenes was George Martin, who worked with The Beatles to become the world’s leading musical act. Even after the band split up, Martin continued to be involved with entertainment, becoming a legend himself.

Martin was born on January 3, 1926 in London, England and almost instantly fell in love with music. However, music would be set aside as Martin focused on more traditional careers during his teenage years that included a stint in the Royal Navy. Using the money that Martin had acquired from working in the military, he attended school to learn music, eventually graduating from the Guildhall School. Martin’s music career carried on, and in the 1950s became an executive on a professional basis.

In that decade, Martin was working with the BBC before joining Parlophone Records as the man in charge. For Martin, there was more of a focus on classical music, and he eventually branched out into comedy records. These novelty albums would end up becoming quite popular, and he worked with some of the most notable comedians of the time. Pop music wasn’t exactly up Martin’s alley at the time, but that would quickly change.

That’s because in the early 1960s, Martin had been alerted to a band manager named Brian Epstein and his group of four musicians known as The Beatles. At the time, The Beatles had been performing for a couple of years at that time, but were mainly relegated to playing in local clubs. Martin listened to the demo tape that Epstein provided him, but didn’t think there was a lot of potential at first. Thankfully for him, Martin decided to take a chance on The Beatles, signing them to a record deal without even seeing one of their concerts and only speaking with Epstein instead of the group.

Shortly after signing the deal, The Beatles would start to record music, with their first wide release single coming with “Love Me Do”. The song would become a hit in the United Kingdom, and the best was still yet to come. After they recorded “Please Please Me”, Martin knew that the band was headed for superstardom. Beatles songs weren’t quite as polished before they had met with Martin, who used his extensive background in music to tweak some of the records that gave them broad appeal.

The Beatles would dominate the 1960s, and although the band was only together for eight years after the release of their first album, they’re still the best selling band of all-time with an estimated 600 million copies sold around the world. Without Martin, it might not have been possible for The Beatles to reach the type of success that they did.

Martin’s success with The Beatles had other artists wanting to work with him, and he achieved hits with performers such as Elton John, Kenny Rogers and America. After The Beatles had split, Martin continued to work extensively with former Beatles member Paul McCartney, which had formed a new band called Wings. The duo has had a record amount of hit songs when teaming up with one another.

When talking about how Beatles songs were composed, Martin said that “The writing of the parts is me and the requirements is them,” adding that “It varied between John (Lennon) and Paul (McCartney). Paul was generally quite articulate with what he wanted. Mostly we would sit down at the piano together and play it through and work out how it would sound.” As for if there was one song that he would go back and change, Martin said that “I wouldn’t want to do anything again. I’m not a person to look back...I’m not trying to do anything better than what we did.”

Martin hadn’t been as busy of a producer once the 1990s started, but did produce the successful 1997 Celine Dion album “The Reason”. He compiled an album of his own the next year, and would only produce one more afterwards. That came in 2006 when he produced the Beatles soundtrack album “Love” to be used in the Cirque du Soleil show that uses Beatles songs as part of the act.

After having lived a very full life, it’s said that Martin passed away peacefully on March 8, 2016. According to former Beatle Ringo Starr, Martin was sleeping when he passed at the age of 90, though an official cause of death wasn’t released. Rock music had lost an icon, and people had immediately wondered what the two surviving Beatles, Starr and McCartney, had to say upon their friend’s death.

“I have so many wonderful memories of this great man that will be with me forever,” McCartney said. “He was a true gentleman and like a second father to me. He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humor that he became a true friend to me and my family.” Starr also added that Martin was an instrumental part of The Beatles, saying “Thank you for all your love and kindness, George.”
