Disney has made megastars out of teenagers for many years now, and there was a period in time where the Jonas Brothers were seemingly unstoppable. Along with his brothers Kevin and Nick, Joe Jonas attempted to reach fame prior to a collaboration with Disney that didn’t have much success.

Joe Jonas is the second oldest of the Jonas Brothers, having been born in Arizona on August 15, 1989. Jonas grew up in a very religious household that would play a part in their music. This involved the brothers wearing purity rings while performing, which made them marketable to young audiences. When one fan asked Jonas’s brother Nick about why they wore them, he said that they were just young teenagers at the time that didn’t have quite the understanding of what they were getting into and would eventually change course.

The trio of brothers was originally signed to Columbia Records in 2005 when they released their first single that didn’t make many waves, and their album was delayed. Then, the executives at Disney took notice of the Jonas Brothers and included them on multiple soundtracks, and it seemed that their popularity exploded overnight as a result. They even received their own television series with Disney and a successful TV movie (“Camp Rock”) that parlayed into a 3D concert film in 2009.

Even though the Jonas Brothers were finding success as actors as well as singers, Joe Jonas wanted to focus on the latter. “Music has always been number one,” he said. “I started in music. Acting has always been on the sidelines.”

Looking back on his time with Disney, Jonas said that “We were just kids. That’s the reality. We were frightened little kids. So you got all this responsibility that’s foisted upon you and you’re expected to be perfect. I went through media training, and I hated it. They’d teach you how to change the subject, whenever you were asked an uncomfortable question, by saying something like, ‘Oh, that reminds me of my dog! I have a great story about my dog!’ Playing dumb is the best way of getting out of anything.”

In 2011, Jonas decided that he wanted to have some solo work in addition to playing with his brothers, and released his first solo song in 2011 with “See No More” from his album “Fastlife”. The album wasn’t a big hit with fans at all, however, but Jonas had been sticking to music and started working with his brothers once again on an album. Jonas would later admit that the solo career was a flop, saying that “It just wasn’t for me. I prefer working with other people and being in a band is important to me.” In 2013, the brothers couldn’t decide on their artistic direction and decided to cancel their tour, leaving an album in limbo that had already had a pair of singles released.

Jonas would end up getting away from his brothers in terms of music, and formed his own band with some of his closer friends. The band became known as DNCE, which was a big change up in terms of sound and performance. “I really enjoyed working with family but, obviously, it’s a very different dynamic this time around,” Jonas said. “With my buddies, it’s been a blast. And honestly, working with my brothers was a blast too, so it feels like I’m doing it all over again.”

The same year in which the band formed, 2015, they released their first single from the EP “Swaay” called “Cake By The Ocean”. The song reached the lower end of the charts at first, but started soaring up the rankings and reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, reaching the top spot in several countries.

DNCE released their first album in 2016, and has headlined a pair of tours since being together. Jonas said that he and his fellow bandmates had “talked about doing a band for years,” adding that “Even when I was touring with my brothers, we had ideas of doing something together whether it was a side project or a band. The time was perfect for us to start the band and take time doing it...I wanted to take a step back and make something slowly I could be proud of.”

The band is currently working on new music, though Jonas has been keeping himself rather busy. Not only was a he a mentor on the United States version of “The Voice”, but he also became a coach on the Australian version earlier in 2018. On top of all of that, Jonas is in a relationship with Sophie Turner of “Game of Thrones” fame with a wedding on the way. Needless to say, things are going well for Jonas even while not singing with his brothers.
