One of the biggest stars of the past 30 years, Johnny Depp continues to be an A-list talent in Hollywood and one of the highest paid actors around. Like most famous actors, Depp had to start toward the bottom and work his way to the top. Depp was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, but moved more than a dozen times throughout his childhood, and eventually found his place in Florida.

Depp didn’t actually want to get into acting at a young age, instead wanting to focus on music as a pre-teen. Around this time, he was even performing at clubs in Miami, and said that becoming an actor was by “accident.” “I needed to pay rent,” Depp said. “Somebody said, ‘Why don’t you go to meet my agent. My agent is with Nic Cage,’ so she sent me on an audition for something and I got it.”

Depp credits working as a telemarketer before he was famous as a way of helping to develop his acting skills. “I marketed pens on the phone,” he said. “But the beauty of the gig was that you had to call these strangers and say, ‘Hi how ya doing?’ You made up a name, like, ‘Hey it’s Edward Quartermaine from California. You’re eligible to receive this grandfather clock or a trip to Tahiti.’ You promise them all these things if they buy a gross of pens. It was just awful, but I actually think that was the first experience I had with acting.”

In 1984, Depp would finally make his way to the big screen when he played one of Freddy Krueger’s many victims in the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street” film. Depp followed up that role with the lead in “Private Resort”, but it was in 1986 that he really found himself as a budding star when he appeared in the Vietnam War film “Platoon”.

Now with his name out there, Depp was able to secure a spot as a television star, appearing on the Fox series “21 Jump Street” that first aired in 1987. Despite making him a more well known name, Depp said that he wasn’t a big fan of the role. He even mentioned that he tried to get himself fired from the show so that he could focus on films. “Thankful as I was to have been given the opportunity...it was a great learning experience,” he said.

With that, Depp was back in theaters as he starred in the film “Cry-Baby” that would become a moderate success that’s perhaps more popular today than it was when it was first released. The other film that he made in the same year was “Edward Scissorhands”, which would end up being a smash hit with both fans and critics. The film established a working relationship between Depp and director Tim Burton, who have teamed up for films such as “Sweeney Todd”, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” just to name a few.

Depp has been nominated for a trio of Oscars during his career, but came up short all three times in the Best Actor category. One of the nominations came from “Sweeney Todd” while the others were from “Finding Neverland” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”.

The latter is perhaps Depp’s most famous role to date, with five total movies in the franchise’s history that have grossed billions of dollars. Other notable roles for Depp in his career include “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, “Donnie Brasco” and “Black Mass”. All in all, Depp’s films have pulled in nearly $4 billion at the box office in the United States alone, with an average of $76 million per film.

Before his career could really take off, Depp had been married to Lori Allison, a makeup artist whom he married in late 1983. The two split up in 1985, and Depp has been involved with some very famous women ever since. Not only was Depp engaged to Jennifer Grey and then Sherilyn Fenn, but also Winona Ryder, receiving a tattoo on his arm with her name on it.

Depp had a long lasting relationship with French actress Vanessa Paradis, and the couple would have two children together; a daughter named Lily-Rose and a son named Jack. The pair would separate in 2012 after more than a decade together, and Depp started dating actress Amber Heard. The couple had a rocky marriage that led to a divorce and allegations of domestic abuse, becoming a very public topic. The two reached a divorce settlement and have since moved on.

Depp continues to stay busy at 55 years old, and has had several roles over the past few years that include reprising his roles as the Mad Hatter and Captain Jack Sparrow. In 2018 alone, Depp has four major acting credits to his name, including films such as “City of Lies” and “Sherlock Gnomes”, with an appearance in the sequel to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”. With plenty of work ahead of him, we certainly haven’t seen the last of Johnny Depp.
