“I am speechless. I am without speech.” A French-American comedienne, actress, producer, voice actor and singer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has spent the last three decades proving her wide range of talents but is perhaps best known for her role as Elaine Benes on NBC’s hit sitcom Seinfeld from 1989 to 1998. However, long before she joined Jerry, Kramer and George in an Upper West Side apartment in Manhattan, she got her start in comedy as a performer in The Practical Theatre Company of Chicago after dropping out of Northwestern University.
Finding early success with the comedy group, Louis-Dreyfus was invited to join the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1982 and spent the next few years building her reputation as an actress and comedienne before landing her breakthrough role in 1989 on Seinfeld. After nine seasons on one of the most successful sitcoms in the history of television, the New York native was finally a household name in Hollywood whose career snowballed with endless appearances in shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development before she landed her own series, The New Adventures of Old Christine, from 2006 to 2010.
Over the course of her stellar career, the Veep producer and star has received countless accolades including nine Emmy Awards, six Screen Actors Guild Awards, five American Comedy Awards, a Golden Globe and many others. With a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and an inductee into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2014, Louis-Dreyfus has even found a spot on Time magazine’s list of the most influential people in the world in 2016.
Apart from her incredible success in the spotlight, few realize that Louis-Dreyfus is more than an accomplished actress and is the daughter of Gerard Louis-Dreyfus—the great grandson of Leopold Louis-Dreyfus who founded the Louis Dreyfus Group, which is a worldwide merchant conglomerate. Today, the company employs over 22,000 people and brings in over $54 billion in annual revenue making the Louis-Dreyfus family incredibly wealthy. To put their wealth in perspective, Julia’s father passed away in September 2016 leaving a $3.5 billion net worth for his family to settle.
Although her dad once admitted, “Well, I couldn’t tell whether she was going to be a star [or not],” Louis-Dreyfus proved her naysayers and critics wrong with a fruitful career that has led to numerous accolades and an impressive $200 million net worth. After her father’s estate is settled between her siblings and her stepmom, she’ll likely surpass the $1 billion mark in the very near future but that doesn’t mean she has plans to spend big. In fact, that’s the last thing on her mind.
Despite her incredible wealth and ability to live anywhere under the sun, Louis-Dreyfus lives a modest life with her husband and fellow Saturday Night Live comedian, Brad Hall, in their main estate in the Pacific Palisades where they raised their two sons. Because of their love of privacy, little is actually known about the California estate but we can only imagine it is jam-packed with luxuries fit for a comedy queen!
In addition to the Palisades pad, Louis-Dreyfus also owns a cozy beachfront bungalow in Montecito, California, which she purchased 20 years ago as a weekend retreat for her family. The eco-friendly house is filled with green technology with its roof completely covered in solar panels that provide enough energy to take care of all the home’s electricity needs from the lights to heating the water. There’s also a thermal chimney that draws hot air out of the house to eliminate any need for air conditioning, which is perfect for the self-proclaimed “devout environmentalist” and future billionaire.
Like we mentioned earlier, Louis-Dreyfus is a star on stage but she is a fairly private person when the cameras aren’t rolling despite being a Hollywood veteran. Because of that, much of her personal spending remains a mystery while her love of helping those in need is definitely front and center. Over the years, she’s proudly supported a number of nonprofit organizations including Clothes Off Our Back, the Dream Foundation, Children’s Tumor Foundation, Stop Global Warming, Stand Up to Cancer and dozens of others. But, her charitable work doesn’t stop there!
Today, the Saturday Night Live star also serves on the Honorary Board of Directors for Heal the Ocean, an organization that works to protect the ocean by seeking out and mitigating sources of pollution. On top of that, the 55-year-old actress is a vocal supporter of the Democratic Party and has endorsed Al Gore, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Regardless of your opinion of her style of comedy or even her political beliefs, there’s no question that Louis-Dreyfus’ heart is in the right place especially after she announced her plans to donate a large portion of her billion-dollar inheritance once everything is settled.
