“Pretty woman, walkin’ down the street...” When it comes to Hollywood, Julia Roberts reigns queen as one of the most beloved and recognizable actresses in the industry. Born and raised in Smyrna, Georgia where she dreamt of becoming a veterinarian as a child, Roberts enrolled at Georgia State University only to drop out and move to New York City to pursue a career on stage. Initially signing with a modeling agency while taking acting classes, she made her silver screen debut alongside Liam Neeson in the 1988 film Satisfaction. Months later, she earned critical praise for her performance in Mystic Pizza and took home her first Golden Globe for the 1989 hit Steel Magnolias.
With her career blossoming, Roberts opened the 1990s with a bang when she starred opposite Richard Gere in Pretty Woman after winning the part of Vivian Ward against Michelle Pfeiffer, Meg Ryan and Molly Ringwald. Taking home her second Golden Globe, Pretty Woman skyrocketed Roberts to fame as it broke several box office records including the highest number of ticket sales in the United States, a record it still holds today.
While many critics worried Roberts wouldn’t be able to top her success from the modern Cinderella story, she gladly accepted the challenge and followed up the film with hits like Sleeping with the Enemy and Hook. Since then, she’s wowed audiences and earned critical acclaim with over 40 films including Erin Brockovich, Stepmom, Notting Hill, My Best Friend’s Wedding and the Ocean’s Eleven franchise that have paired her opposite heavy-hitting A-listers like Denzel Washington, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Brad Pitt and George Clooney.
Proving her talents as a producer along the way (is there anything she can’t do?), Roberts’ success in Hollywood, critical acclaim and worldwide recognition is truly remarkable when it comes to her accolades and her fortune. Earning 92 award nominations and 59 wins since her debut in 1987, her trophy room includes an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, three Golden Globes, a BAFTA Award and dozens of others. So, now that we know about her fame, what about her fortune?
With Pretty Woman giving Roberts her first glimpse of fortune and fame after earning $464 million worldwide in 1990, the Eat Pray Love star spent the 1990s and the first half of the new millennium as the highest paid actress in the world. Bringing in a salary of $300,000 for Pretty Woman, Roberts was obviously in high demand over a decade later in 2003 when she was paid $25 million for her role in Mona Lisa Smile, which was unheard of at the time. Thanks to paychecks like that, it’s no surprise Roberts has amassed an impressive $140 million net worth that allows her to buy whatever her heart desires, including a $30 million mansion in Malibu.
Located in northwestern Los Angeles County, the stunning estate stretches over 6,000 square feet and is entirely environmentally friendly thanks to Roberts’ commitment to go green. In order to reduce the home’s carbon footprint, Roberts installed large solar panels on the roof and used recycled tile throughout the home. With plenty of money to spare, she didn’t think twice when it came to spending a small fortune on wood taken from a sustainable forest.
In addition to her California abode where she and her husband, cameraman Daniel Moder, spend the majority of their time with their three children—twins Hazel and Finn, and son Henry—Roberts also owns a smaller beachfront property in California, a 50-acre ranch in Taos, New Mexico and a luxurious apartment in Manhattan. However, while her real estate portfolio has slowly grown over the years, her car collection certainly has not and leaves her garage far from impressive. In fact, Roberts joined the likes of Larry Page, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Sarah Jessica Parker and numerous others on a quest to save the environment one Toyota Prius at a time. And, as you can guess, it doesn’t take a huge garage to store an eco-car like that!
Aside from being a strict environmentalist and pledging to save the world one Prius at a time, Roberts is an advocate for many causes and is known for giving her time and money to UNICEF. In 1995, she made headlines when she spent six days in Port-au-Prince raising $10 million to aid the poverty-stricken area. But, she hasn’t stopped there. In 2000, Roberts lent her voice to a documentary promoting awareness about Rett syndrome and, in 2006, she became a spokeswoman for Earth Biofuels, which promotes the use of renewable fuels. Doing her part to empower young women as part of Gucci’s Chime for Change campaign, there isn’t much the former Pretty Woman hasn’t done in both her career and community, especially after taking on the voice of Mother Nature herself in a short film about climate change in 2014. Now that’s exactly what it means to do your part, Hollywood style!
