Famous For Daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver
For many of us, we weren’t born into families that have had a lot of influence, especially on a global scale. That’s not the case for Katherine Schwarzenegger, however, who has quite the famous background. Schwarzenegger’s father is, of course, the legendary actor and former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Her mother is Maria Shriver, the daughter of former United States President John F. Kennedy’s sister, Eunice. Those are two pretty remarkable families to come from.
Arnold Schwarzenegger had known Shriver for nearly a decade by the time 1986 rolled around, which is when the couple got married. Together, they would have four children, starting with Katherine Schwarzenegger on December 13, 1989, having been born in Los Angeles. Of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s five total children, four would grow up in the household with Katherine’s younger siblings Patrick, Christina and Christopher.
Growing up with three younger siblings, Schwarzenegger said that “I’m a typical oldest sibling. I think of myself as being like mom number two, so I’m always saying, ‘Don’t do that’ or ‘Do this.’” adding that “My siblings and I are really close, and my parents did a really good job in raising us that way. It gets more fun as you get older - age stops mattering, which makes it more enjoyable.”
Katherine Schwarzenegger didn’t spend too much time in front of the cameras when she was growing up, but said she learned how to deal with paparazzi. “It definitely bothers me,” she says of being followed in public. “It’s not the most exciting thing to go out and be harassed by people, but I think if you try and take a deep breath and keep your mouth shut, you’ll be fine.”
After she had graduated from high school, Katherine would attend the University of Southern California in her hometown, where she had majored in communications. While she was still in college, Schwarzenegger would end up writing a book called “Rock What You’ve Got: Secrets to Loving Your Inner and Outer Beauty from Someone Who’s Been There and Back.”
The book dealt with self image, which is something that Schwarzenegger says she struggled with growing up. “I think doing this book has definitely given me more credibility as my own person,” she said upon its release. “My dad literally was reading this book and was like, ‘I don’t know any of this stuff. It explains a lot about why you were so moody sometimes, but I don’t understand all this stuff about women.”
The success of her book kept Schwarzenegger in writing, and she’s since produced two more books. The first of those books came when she didn’t know what to do with her career after she had received her degree in 2012. After speaking with many people from all walks of life about what to do following college, she released “I Just Graduated...Now What?” in 2014. Three years later, she’d release another book about adopting shelter animals with the book “Maverick and Me”.
Schwarzenegger’s parents have since divorced, but she does remain close with both of her parents. However, she says that it’s her mother that she spends more time speaking with. “I’ve always been way closer to my mom,” she says. “Even when I was little, I was glued to her all the time. I’m close to my dad, but they’re totally different kinds of relationships. I talk to my mom about six times a day, and we constantly e-mail in between that. People say that I’m her twin. I guess it would be my Kennedy genes.”
Just like her mother, Schwarzenegger aspires to not only be an author, but wants to work in broadcast journalism. Shriver had started working with the press back in the early 1970s, and worked with several news outlets including CBS and NBC, the latter of which allowing her to appear on the NBC Nightly News on the weekends. Schwarzenegger would like to also be on NBC, with the goal of working on “The Today Show”.
As for her immediate plans, Schwarzenegger wants to continue working with her mother for several different charities. “I want to do a lot with women and women’s empowerment,” she said. “So I want to start doing an intimate dinner series and a younger version of what my mom did with The Women’s Conference when she was the First Lady of California...I grew up with my mom and grandmother being very empowered and taking us to different events that would make us feel that way, so to see change happening in the world was an incredible experience.”
Not only has she been busy making headlines for her own work, but has also been talked about because of her new relationship. Schwarzenegger has been linked with “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Jurassic World” star Chris Pratt. Whether or not they get married has yet to be seen, but Schwarzenegger isn’t put off by the idea following her parent’s divorce. “I definitely want to get married,” she said. “I learn a lot from both of my parents about relationships and marriage and how to have a good and healthy relationship...I think being in a loving and healthy relationship is the greatest gift.”
