Famous For Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Victoria's Secret Model
Imagine growing up in a family that already has an Olympic gold medalist as your father, and then you get famous at just 12 years old. That’s been life for Kendall Jenner, the daughter of Kris and Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner, who was raised along with eight siblings and half-siblings through childhood.
Jenner wasn’t exactly going through the normal childhood that many of us do, as she was raised in the prominent family and became part of a reality television series when she was 12, appearing on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” that’s still on the air more than a decade later. Jenner would also appear on several spin-offs that included her older sisters.
Growing up in front of the cameras, Jenner said that she wasn’t fazed at all, and her siblings didn’t mind it too much, either. Jenner did say, though, that she stood out from her siblings because “I’ve always been the different one,” adding that “I mean, I’m a girl and I like being a girl, but I’ve just never been into it like they have. I think I get that from my dad. I’d say I’m more of a Jenner than a Kardashian.”
The exposure from the reality series would be a stepping stone for the career that Jenner wanted most: modeling. When she was 14 years old, Jenner was signed with the Wilhelmina Models agency, allowing her to appear in many different advertisements and on magazine covers over the world. After turning 18, Jenner wanted to focus on higher fashion and ditched Wilhelmina Models to sign with Society Management.
Some of the most respected names in fashion wanted to put Jenner on a runway while wearing their clothing, and she was traveling the globe to show off designers such as Fendi, Tommy Hilfiger and Chanel. Millions would tune in to see Jenner on the runway for themselves for the first time in 2015 as she appeared in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Jenner’s focus on her modeling career caused her to drop out of school so that she could become homeschooled; something which had its positives and negatives. Jenner said she feels she missed out on college, but that “I don’t even know if I regret that. I had a pretty normal childhood...I did homeschool, but I still saw a lot of my old friends. I didn’t go to prom, though, which was kind of annoying.” These days, she wishes that she could go out in public without being photographed or hounded by people, saying “To be able to hang out and meet new people and not be bothered would be awesome.”
When she’s not modeling, Jenner has been active as a businesswoman, creating lines of cosmetics such as lipstick and nail lacquer. Jenner has also gotten into the mobile app market, launching a spin-off of the popular Kim Kardashian mobile game called Kendall and Kylie. We’ve even seen Jenner work as a photographer, shooting for some of her famous friends in modeling.
Jenner already makes a lot of headlines, though there have been times where she’s been met with criticism from the public. Jenner had created a line of T-shirts with sister Kylie that featured logos of popular bands and musicians, and the line had to be put to a stop since they didn’t get permission to use the likenesses. Jenner would also appear in the 2017 Pepsi “Live for Now” advertisement that many felt missed the mark with the commentary that it was trying to make.
Jenner would end up apologizing for the advertisement, even though her contract said that she was unable to comment. “To get something like (a Pepsi ad) was so exciting,” Jenner said. “I trusted everyone. I trusted the teams. After I saw the reaction and read what people had to say about it, I most definitely saw what went wrong. I was so stuck and I really didn’t know what to do, so I completely shut down.”
She added that “I feel really, really bad. I feel really bad that anyone was ever offended. I feel really bad that this was taken such a wrong way, and I feel like s***. I have no idea how I am going to bounce back from it.”
Thankfully for Jenner, many people have moved on from the advertisement, though it’s something that she’s always going to have to deal with as it will inevitably be brought up during her career. There are still plenty of modeling jobs lined up for Jenner and reality television isn’t likely to go away anytime soon. There may have been that one slight hiccup, but Jenner is doing just fine.
“I feel like the life I live is extraordinary in a lot of ways, but that it also comes with a lot of responsibilities,” she said. “I’ve had to grow up pretty fast and deal with situations most 22 year olds aren’t really put into. There are days and weeks and months when you just don’t stop.”
