“Some people have bark. Some people have bite. I have both.” Long before she ever caught her big break in Hollywood, Kerry Washington was a bright-eyed and ambitious child whose dreams of taking the stage fueled her childhood in the Bronx. By the time she reached her teens, the New York native was keen on pursuing a career in show business and spent the majority of her free time performing with a youth theater group while taking drama classes at Manhattan’s prestigious Spence School.
Putting her big-screen ambitions on hold and enrolling at George Washington University, Washington graduated with dual degrees in anthropology and sociology in 1998 only to discover something was still missing. Finally deciding to jump feet first into acting, she appeared in a handful of commercials before making her way to the silver screen in the new millennium with films like Save the Last Dance, The Human Stain and Bad Company. It wasn’t until 2004 when Washington truly earned her place in Hollywood with Ray, which she followed up with a string of appearances in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Last King of Scotland and Fantastic Four.
With her career blossoming in Tinsel Town, Washington finally received the role of a lifetime in 2012 when she was cast as Olivia Pope in Shonda Rhimes’ newest drama on ABC, Scandal. Seemingly taking over primetime as the impeccably dressed crisis management expert hitting the streets of Washington D.C., the 39-year-old Washington is now one of the most recognized stars in Hollywood with her performance earning her countless award nominations including two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Apart from her incredible success and critical acclaim on Scandal, Washington is also bringing in one heck of a paycheck from the series after taking home over $80,000 per episode, which brings her yearly total to $2 million in 2015 alone. Adding that to her already impressive $12 million net worth and there’s no question that the Django Unchained star is living the lifestyle of the rich and famous both on and off the set.
Choosing to spend a good portion of her wealth on settling down with her husband, NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha, Washington purchased a stunning French Country mansion in Cahuenga Pass of Los Angeles’ prestigious Hollywood Hills. Deemed more of a compound than an estate, the home’s perimeter stretches across 30,000 square feet with the house itself situated on top of a small hill that allows for hypnotic views of the city and a glimpse of the iconic Hollywood sign. But, that’s certainly not all!
Originally built in 1926 and seeing multiple renovations over the years, the home offers 3,294 square feet and includes five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a lavish master suite. With Washington putting her own touches on the décor, the interior is tastefully decorated with heated hardwood floors, multiple fireplaces, a private gym and a state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen.
Moving outside, there’s even more beauty with a small guesthouse that offers gorgeous hillside views as well as its own kitchen. Nestled between the main house and the guesthouse is an outdoor entertainment area that includes a large television projector perfect for an outdoor movie screening or a big party with family and friends. If that’s not enough, there’s a spacious sitting area with comfy couches and a modern fire pit as well as a large gazebo, basketball court and an oversized swimming pool.
Interestingly enough, Washington purchased the estate in 2014 for around $1.9 million but, according to current records, she’s put the home back on the market with a price tag of $2.695 million. So why is the power couple selling? Our guess is that they’re looking for a bigger place to accommodate their growing family after welcoming their daughter, Isabelle, in 2014 and their son, Caleb, in 2016.
Beyond her gorgeous estate and the wild chatter of the rumor mill that undeniably keeps us guessing, Washington keeps a close lid on her finances and is notoriously private when it comes to her personal life. However, what we do know is that even though she’s incredibly wealthy, she’s one of the most humble, compassionate and generous celebrities who values the opportunity to put her fortune and fame to good use.
Over the last two decades, the award-winning actress has supported numerous charities including Got Your 6, Peace Over Violence and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. A known activist who knows that donating money is only part of the solution, Washington works on the front lines with organizations like the Human Rights Campaign, Creative Coalition, V-Day and the Turnaround Arts Initiative to improve the world one small step at a time. Because of this and her incredible success, Washington received her greatest honor to date in 2013, an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from her alma mater. Just call her, Dr. Washington!
