“I'm never happier than when I'm on set.” Although Margot Robbie is relatively new to Hollywood, the Australian beauty is quickly becoming a household name after starring in over a dozen feature films since making her debut in 2008. However, the fact that Robbie is a known celebrity is an incredible feat after her troubled childhood on a farm in Dalby, Queensland. Growing up with three siblings and without a father, Robbie watched her mother struggle to support the family as a physiotherapist before she was old enough to help by working three jobs herself at the age of 16.
Doing her best to balance school, chores on the farm and working over 30 hours each week, Robbie turned to drama class at Somerset College as an outlet for her creativity and an escape from her long list of adult responsibilities at such a young age. Desperate for a fresh start after graduation, the 17-year-old hopped on a train and left the farm far behind as she made the long journey to Melbourne to pursue a career in acting.
The risky move ended up paying off much faster than Robbie imagined as she landed her first acting gig in the 2007 Australian thriller I.C.U. months before she hired an agent. While I.C.U. was far from successful, it was enough to jumpstart Robbie’s career and led her to a handful of commercials and appearances in The Elephant Princess and City Homicide before she was cast as Donna Freedman on Neighbours in 2008. Building an impressive fan base over the next few years, Robbie secured the Most Popular Actress nomination at the Logie Awards in 2011 and, the following year, finally decided to capitalize on her success by moving to Hollywood.
Arriving stateside just in time for pilot season, Robbie auditioned for the new series of Charlie’s Angels in 2011 but was cast in the ABC drama Pan Am alongside Christina Ricci. Although the series was canceled after the first season, the Australian beauty was well on her way to stardom as she landed role after role in blockbusters like The Legend of Tarzan, The Wolf of Wall Street and Suicide Squad. As a result, the 26-year-old Robbie is widely recognized as one of Hollywood’s rising stars with her growing net worth further proof that she’s finally on her way to both fortune and fame.
Currently worth $10 million after earning $3.5 million in 2015, both Robbie’s career and bank account are on an upward spiral leaving little doubt that, with better and more prominent roles, the young actress can expect even bigger paychecks in her future. However, with her millionaire status still fairly new, Robbie isn’t quick to spend and admitted as much during an interview with an Australian tabloid. “I don’t spend much money at all,” she said. “It actually makes me really anxious, just the idea of it. It seems crazy to spend a huge amount of money on things you don’t need. I’m pretty frugal.”
When most celebrities claim to be frugal, it usually means they don’t own a private jet or a dozen houses around the world; however, Robbie isn’t exaggerating. Still as humble as ever, the About Time star and her boyfriend, British director Tom Ackerley, still live with roommates to save on rent. Why mess up a good thing?
With absolutely no reason not to buy her own house, real estate simply isn’t on Robbie’s radar as she told Glamour magazine that she enjoys sharing a flat in London, England with Ackerley and four others. Why? Robbie says the chaos of living with so many people reminds her of her childhood in Australia. And, to set the record straight, she added, “Actually, we’ve downsized. Until recently we were living with seven others.”
If Robbie isn’t spending a small fortune on a lavish estate in the Hollywood Hills or on a fancy sports car, what is she spending it on? Unfortunately, the answer isn’t as exciting as you might think! Ever since getting her feet wet in the Australian film industry in 2008, Robbie has saved every penny she’s earned after watching her mother struggle as a single parent. Aside from financing her move to the United States and hiring a few dialect coaches, she has been incredibly frugal.
Granted, Robbie occasionally splurges on a new outfit or pair of shoes but realizes that staying up to date with the latest fashion trends is simply part of her job as a rising Hollywood star. Keeping that in mind, both Robbie’s career and bank account are still in their infancy, which means we’re certain there will be plenty of updates in the future about her first home, luxury car and more. In the meantime, we’ll just have to sit back and watch the stunning beauty from Down Under wow the world from the silver screen—and that’s perfectly fine with us!
