“I’m sorry, I won’t apologize; I’m not confident which end that came out of…” Hailing from Plainfield, Illinois where she grew up on a farm, Melissa McCarthy was born into a family of devout Catholics of Irish and English descent. Although her parents were not rich by any means, McCarthy never went without and enjoyed an average childhood growing up playing with cousins Jenny McCarthy, now a model and actress, and Joanne McCarthy, a professional basketball player. By the time she was in her teens, McCarthy developed an interest in comedy and decided to pursue it professionally with the hopes of making it big in Hollywood.
After graduating from the Joliet Catholic Academy, McCarthy moved to Los Angeles where she joined a sketch comedy group called The Groundlings that jumpstarted her career in stand-up and helped her get comfortable on the stage. Despite spending the first few years relatively unknown in the industry, everything changed for McCarthy in 1997 when she was invited to make an appearance on NBC’s short-lived sitcom Jenny where she starred opposite her more popular cousin, Jenny McCarthy. Small world, isn’t it?
A few years after appearing on the failed sitcom, the up-and-coming actress made her silver screen debut with a minor role in Go and, although the film received poor reviews, it ignited a fire in McCarthy’s career as her popularity skyrocketed and she landed bigger and bigger roles. In 2000, her luck improved once again when she was cast as Sookie St. James on the hit television series Gilmore Girls starring Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham. Spending the next seven years on the series, McCarthy’s popularity increased tenfold as she starred alongside Hollywood A-listers in blockbusters like The Hangover Part III, Bridesmaids and the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters.
With over 40 projects to her name and many more in the works, McCarthy’s success in Hollywood is undeniable with over 65 award nominations including a coveted Oscar for her performance in Bridesmaids, a Golden Globe nomination for Spy and five Primetime Emmy Award nominations, one of which she took home for Mike & Molly in 2011. In total, the 46-year-old Illinois native has secured an impressive 20 wins with the majority of her accolades coming in the last five years alone.
While many argue that McCarthy has arrived somewhat late to the Hollywood party, she definitely gets the last laugh by enjoying worldwide recognition, critical acclaim and an impressive paycheck. Currently worth over $50 million and counting, the comic earned an impressive $33 million in 2015 with most of her earnings coming from her work on Ghostbusters. And, if her recent paychecks are any indication of her future, the superstar will break the $100 million mark by the turn of the decade, just watch!
Until then, the actress is living it up in style in her $5 million luxury mansion in Toluca Lake, California. Spanning nearly 9,000 square feet with seven bedrooms and just as many bathrooms, the beautiful colonial-style estate underwent a massive multimillion dollar renovation in preparation for McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone.
Boasting a long list of amenities including an elevator to add convenience, McCarthy’s stunning home is complete with a well-equipped home gym, a large indoor spa and sauna, wine cellar and more. There’s even a private home theater that measures over 1,000 square feet and offers the perfect venue for kicking back and relaxing with the latest blockbuster streaming on the silver screen.
Of course, the luxury doesn’t stop on the inside. Although the property already had a massive swimming pool, McCarthy decided even that needed improving and filled in the existing pool to make room for an even bigger one. In addition, she added a lavish guest house, a championship tennis court, an oversized spa and an outdoor kitchen and large deck that is perfect for intimate parties with her family and a few of her closest Hollywood friends.
Beyond the renovations and redecorating her home, McCarthy has simple tastes when it comes to filling her garage and has been seen cruising around the last few years in her black Range Rover. Proving time and time again she’s far from materialistic and has fairly simple tastes that reflect on her childhood in Illinois, the Gilmore Girls star is also a relatively private person when it comes to her home life and her spending. As a matter of fact, the media knows very little about McCarthy other than the fact that she enjoys traveling and spending time with her loved ones. Occasionally splurging on a new outfit and accessories, the actress leads a fairly modest lifestyle and remains humble, which is definitely a feat considering her overnight leap to great fortune and fame. Then again, maybe growing up on an Illinois farm has had a lasting effect on one of Hollywood’s beloved and talented funny ladies.
