“You’re the first boy I ever kissed, Jake, and I want you to be the last.” Born in the Big Easy of New Orleans and raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon was only 15 years old when she made her feature film debut in the 1991 coming-of-age drama The Man in the Moon. With the film doing well in the box office and earning Witherspoon a Young Artist Award nomination, the young actress saw her career and fan base slowly blossom as she secured breakout roles in films like Desperate Choices: To Save My Child and Jack the Bear. It wasn’t until the new millennium, however, that Witherspoon truly became a household name.
Skyrocketing to stardom as Elle Woods in the 2001 film Legally Blonde, Witherspoon has continued to wow audiences as one of Hollywood’s beloved southern belles with hits including Sweet Home Alabama, Walk the Line and Water for Elephants. She has snagged 87 award nominations along the way with 51 wins including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award and a highly coveted Oscar. To top it off, she’s added to her critical acclaim and worldwide recognition with top dollar paydays that have built a jaw-dropping $80 million net worth.
With 20% of her net worth tied up in real estate, Witherspoon just might spend the majority of her $9.5 million annual salary on paying the mortgages and maintaining her four properties—two in Tennessee and two in California. Spending the majority of her time in Los Angeles, Witherspoon purchased Steven Seagal’s exquisite Brentwood estate for $7 million in 2010. The home, which is nestled on over an acre of lush greenery, stretches over 6,000 square feet with seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and stunning California views.
Before the ink was even dry on the mortgage paperwork in 2010, Witherspoon had big plans of renovating the home to better suit her tastes. Today, the property looks like an entirely new estate with a long list of lavish amenities including a wine cellar, heated swimming pool, home gym and private theater. But, she didn’t stop there! Witherspoon transformed one part of the home into a Buddhist temple which, to this day, serves as a spiritual center for the family.
Moving beyond her Brentwood estate, Witherspoon’s second home (until 2013) is actually a ranch better known as Libbey Ranch in Ojai, California. Sitting on over six acres of land with a $6.98 million price tag, the main home offers plenty of space with over 5,000 square feet that includes a professional kitchen with chef-grade appliances and custom white cabinetry as well as an adjacent dining area that opens to the living room. With a massive master suite measuring over 600 square feet beyond the walk-in closet and en-suite bath, everything in the home beautifully coordinates from the stone-lined hallways and fireplaces to the rustic charm of the hardware and vaulted ceilings.
The charm, however, wasn’t enough to keep Witherspoon at home and inspired the Gone Girl star to list the property in 2012 after tying the knot with talent agent Jim Toth in 2011. Ultimately cutting her losses and selling it for far less than she paid in 2013, Witherspoon turned her attention to her Tennessee properties which, by any measure, are much more modest than her California abodes.
Having dropped a cool $760,000 on her first home in Nashville’s prestigious Tony Bell Meade gated community in 2005, Witherspoon has spent the last decade watching her property value climb higher and higher. While little is actually known about her estate, we do know the southern star further entrenched herself in Nashville life in 2014 when she and Toth purchased a historic mansion for $1.95 million just yards away from the governor’s mansion. With plans to renovate the Oak Hill home and its spacious 3,855 square feet, there’s no doubt that this property will see its value double, if not triple, in the years to come.
Apart from spending a small fortune on her luxe abodes, Witherspoon is also no stranger to spending big when it comes to cars, her three kids and fashion. According to tabloids, the Nashville native owns at least seven luxury cars with her seemingly “modest” collection including a Mercedes GL350, a Porsche Panamera, a Mercedes-Benz E Class, a Porsche Cayenne and a handful others. No, she doesn’t own a Toyota Prius like so many fellow celebs!
Other than cars, Witherspoon definitely loves to splurge on designer brands like Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Versace to ensure her fate as one of Hollywood’s beloved and stylish leading ladies. However, she hasn’t stopped there. Most recently, Witherspoon launched her own clothing boutique in Nashville called Draper James that highlights her own contemporary, Southern style. All we can say is be ready because we expect Witherspoon’s net worth to climb even higher with yet another business venture in the works!
