Canada has graced the world with a lot of great singers and bands, but none have been more successful in the mainstream than Celine Dion. Throughout her career, the singer of hits such as “My Heart Will Go On”, “The Power of Love” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” has sold nearly 225 million albums worldwide, putting her among the highest sellers ever.
Because of her massive album success, Dion has also become one of the richest musicians on the globe with an estimated net worth of $400 million, currently holding a high-paying residency in Las Vegas. Before she made it big, Dion was just a 12 year old when she met 38 year old Rene Angelil, a former singer that had become a manager. He’d become Dion’s manager at the time when he saw her massive potential throughout her teenage years.
When she was 20 years old, Dion started a relationship with Angelil in 1988, and were engaged in 1991. After three years of engagement, Dion and Angelil were married on December 17, 1994 in Montreal. Immediately after their marriage, the couple tried to have children, but were having complications conceiving. Following operations to improve their chances, Dion became pregnant and the couple had their first son on January 25, 2001, naming him Rene-Charles Angelil.
Rene-Charles’s parents strived to give him the most normal life that they could, instead of forcing him into the music scene while he was growing up. Sadly, when he was just 15 years old, his father would pass away at the age of 73. Rene-Charles would speak at his father’s funeral, saying “15 years is not a long time to get to know your father. He had a busy life, but we were getting to know each other through golf, poker, smoked meat and other wonderful food.”
He became a focal point of the funeral as he sat next to his mother, and continued with his eulogy saying that they were “Bonding more and more as time went by. You left me now with enough good memories of you to share with my younger brothers. As they grow older without you being around, I’ll make sure to pass on what I’ve learned from you. You are a tough act to follow, but with your help everything is going to be fine.” The younger brothers that Rene-Charles was talking about are Eddy and Nelson, twins that were born on October 23, 2010.
Unlike his father, Angelil doesn’t have interest in being a manager. However, he also doesn’t want to do the adult contemporary pop music that his mother does, either. Instead, Angelil wants to get involved in rap music. What’s more is that Angelil didn’t really tell anybody about his blossoming rap career, either. What happened was that Angelil went by the stage name of Big Tip, and recorded tracks from the family home in Vegas.
While the Canadian SoundCloud R&B Charts might not indicate mainstream success like the Billboard Hot 100, Angelil did find two of his songs reach the top two spots in this category. He said in an interview that he had kept his career a secret from his mother. “It’s kind of messed up, honestly,” he said. “I played it for her the first time. I just felt like keeping it on the low, but she loved it. She was just kind of stunned at first, because she’d never heard any (music) from me. It was kind of a weird conversation: ‘Ma, I’m number one and number two on the charts right now.’ She was like: ‘Why didn’t you tell me first?’ But she’s very supportive of my passion for this.”
Angelil has said that he didn’t tell his mother because he wanted to form his own path instead of getting studio time with major record labels. “I wanted to prove to myself that I’m able to do it,” he said. “Not just because my mom is who my mom is,” and that making himself under the shadow of who he called the greatest singer of all time is the most important thing for himself right now.
At just 17 years old, Angelil has a very promising career as Big Tip, saying that his lyrics come from his own life experiences. Now that his identity is out, there are of course going to be some people that said that if he makes it, it will be because of his famous family. As he gets older, though, Angelil says that the online critics aren’t getting to him, and is even open to collaborating with his mother.
The rapper still lives at home with his mother, which is only to be expected when you’re that age. He’s already displayed a lot of talent, and has quite a few fans built up. On social media, he already has more than 57,000 followers, which is a number that’s only expected to go through the roof as he gains more of a reputation in rap.
