There are certain movies that you can watch over and over again without ever getting tired of them. Two of the first films that come to mind are “Forrest Gump” and “The Princess Bride”, and those movies have something in common, as they both star Robin Wright. Even though she’s most known for her roles in those movies, Wright has had a lengthy career that’s received a lot of praise from both critics and audiences alike.

Wright didn’t grow up with famous parents, as she was born in Dallas, Texas on April 8, 1966 to a mother that sold Mary Kay cosmetics and a father that worked in the pharmaceutical industry. Eventually, the family would move to the suburbs of San Diego before she made her way to Los Angeles. As a teenager, Wright began a career as a model, which helped her earn exposure that eventually landed her on television.

Wright made her on-screen debut in 1983 when she appeared in two episodes of the series “The Yellow Rose” before getting her break as a soap opera star on the show “Santa Barbara”. For more than 500 episodes, Wright played the role of Kelly Capwell, earning herself multiple soap opera awards. This opened up a film career for Wright, who made her feature film debut in 1986’s “Hollywood Vice Squad”, and followed it up with the timeless classic “The Princess Bride”.

When the 1990s came around, Wright shifted away from television as she put soap operas behind her and focused on her movie career. Of course, “Forrest Gump” would be the biggest hit during the decade, and she added in notable appearances such as “Toys”, “She’s So Lovely” and “Message in a Bottle”. In the 2000s, Wright added even more memorable films to her resume with the likes of “Unbreakable”, “Beowulf” and “New York, I Love You”.

One aspect of Wright’s career that’s received a lot of focus is her personal life. That’s mainly because she was half of one of Hollywood’s biggest married couples for more than a decade. Wright had previously been married to actor Dane Witherspoon for two years in the late 1980s, but shortly after the divorce started a relationship with actor Sean Penn. In 1991, the couple had their first child when daughter Dylan was born, and had a son in 1993 named Hopper. In 1996, Wright and Penn were married, but eventually divorced in 2010, ending over 20 years of being together.

In the time since their divorce, Wright has said that the split was “devastating,” adding that having children together made it hard for the two to break up permanently. Wright then revealed several years after their divorce that she and Penn don’t remain in contact. “Sean sees the kids. They see him, they see me. We’ve all got our own lives,” she said. Even with children in the mix, Wright and Penn don’t talk much at all.

Penn chimed in on the rumors, confirming that it was true. “(We) don’t have a lot of conversation,” he said. However, he noted that the two aren’t exactly on bad terms. “We don’t not get along. We have very separate relationships with our kids at this point and it seems to work better that way because they are making their own decisions,” Penn added. “As it turned out, she and I did not share the same ethical views on parenting, including the continuing parenting of adult children.”

When talking about his children, Penn said that they’re doing “great,” adding that “They’re amazing people. They’re both acting and modeling, an industry that I’m not very interested in but they seem to have fun with it...I’m supportive of whatever my kids do that keeps them happy and healthy, period.”

Wright doesn’t like to talk about the divorce much, saying that she’s “not in the business of talking about what isn’t,” adding that “My eyes are set forward and I’ve never been happier. I have too much respect for Sean and our two extraordinary children to sell our past joys and woes for public consumption and fodder...I believe we were together not only to have our beautiful children but to learn how to love.”

Now that they’re both adults and living their own lives, Wright is able to see them follow in both her and Penn’s footsteps. Dylan has been in films such as “Condemned” and “Elvis & Nixon”, while Wright has moved on in terms of relationships. After her divorce from Penn, Wright started a relationship with actor Ben Foster. The two were engaged twice, but were never married. In 2017, she started dating businessman Clement Giraudet, and the two were married in 2018.

Wright’s career has also continued to keep going following the headline-filling divorce. On the big screen, Wright has starred in films such as “Moneyball”, “Wonder Woman” and “Blade Runner 2049”. A “Wonder Woman” sequel is also on the way in 2020 after the first film was a box office mega-hit. In 2018, Wright also wrapped up the popular Netflix series “House of Cards” where she played Claire Underwood for more than 70 episodes, in which she earned three Golden Globe nominations and a win, as well as five Emmy Award nominations.
