It’s always interesting to see how a celebrity got their start, and Selena Gomez is certainly one of them. Gomez was born on July 22, 1992 in Texas when he mother was 16 years old, and the family had struggled for money. “I remember my mom would run out of gas all of the time and we’d sit there and have to through the car and get quarters and help her get gas because she never liked to ask my grandparents for money,” she said.

Gomez wanted to get away from that type of life, and pursued entertainment at a very young age. She worked on her acting and singing abilities, and auditioned for just about any role that she could find. Gomez would get her break when she appeared as one of the cast members of “Barney & Friends” alongside fellow future star Demi Lovato.

“I learned everything from that show,” Gomez said. “So it’s such a wonderful memory to me. A lot of people would be embarrassed to say they were on ‘Barney’ but I embrace the fact and I had such a wonderful time doing that show.”

The role would help get Gomez’s foot in the door, and all of a sudden she was appearing on television shows and films in smaller roles before getting her biggest break in the industry. IN 2007, Gomez was cast in the lead role in the Disney Channel original series “Wizards of Waverly Place” that made her one of the biggest stars on the network.

Gomez was also able to showcase her singing chops while with Disney, earning herself a record label deal where she formed a band called Selena Gomez & The Scene. The group released their first album in 2009, though it wouldn’t end up being as successful as her future albums. When she went solo in 2012 and ended her time on “Wizards of Waverly Place”, Gomez would end up becoming a mainstream star.

Appearing in films such as “Spring Breakers”, Gomez would also work on her first solo album called “Stars Dance” that included the hit songs “Come & Get It” and “Slow Down”. Gomez followed up in 2015 with her second solo album, “Revival”, and both albums would reach number one in the United States. Three singles from the album would reach the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10.

Now, Gomez is working on her third album that already has three songs that have reached the charts, though a name for the new album hasn’t been announced. When it does release, though, you can expect it to be her third album to reach number one.

At 18 years old, Gomez also started a relationship with singer Justin Bieber. The two instantly became one of the most talked about couples in entertainment, though they would have several split-ups since they first started dating. Gomez would also be involved in a relationship with rapper The Weeknd, but it’s always been Bieber that has drawn the most public interest.

In 2018, Bieber and Gomez would reunite once again, producing a lot of headlines in the process. It followed an amicable breakup with The Weeknd, and Gomez said of her reunion with Bieber that “I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really impacted my life. So maybe before, it could have been forcing something that wasn’t right, but that doesn’t mean caring for someone ever goes away.”

Health problems would sideline Gomez from the mainstream for a bit of time since she was diagnosed with lupus, causing her to have to cancel multiple appearances and concerts. Looking for a donor, actress and Gomez’s friend Francia Raisa from “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” would lend her help, donating a kidney to Gomez in a 2017 operation.

Gomez credits Raisa with saving her life, saying that “My kidneys were just done. That was it and I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life...and she volunteered and did it.” She added that “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed.”

The procedure allowed Gomez to get back into her career with both singing and acting. Gomez has released hit songs over the past year that include “Bad Liar” and “Wolves”, and has appeared in movies such as “A Rainy Day in New York” and “Hotel Transylvania 3”. At just 25 years old, Gomez has a new lease on life and no signs of slowing down her career. Her star is as bright as it’s ever been, and she figures to be one of the biggest names in pop music history before it’s all said and done.

As for her future, Gomez says that “I don’t really set goals because I don’t want to be too disappointed if I don’t reach them, but I do want to work on my music too. My next album has been forever in the making. When people ask me why, I’m honest about it: It’s because I haven’t been ready...I don’t feel confident enough in where my music is yet. If that takes 10 years, then it takes 10 years. I don’t care.”
