“Confidence is 10% hard work and 90% delusion.” Growing up in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania where her parents exposed her to comedy at an early age with Saturday Night Live and Marx Brothers marathons, Tina Fey was like any small town girl who had high hopes of one day making it to the big city. An honors student who stayed busy in drama club and choir while playing tennis and serving as editor of her high school newspaper, Fey knew her future was in comedy and enrolled at the University of Virginia to study acting and playwriting.
Dabbling in improv while taking classes at the Chicago-based theater troupe known as The Second City, Fey’s confidence blossomed as she sent out a few scripts to Saturday Night Live. As luck would have it, she met with SNL creator Lorne Michaels and was hired on the spot. Ultimately making the move from the Windy City to the Big Apple, Fey’s future in comedy was only beginning as she continued to hone her craft with a series of satirical sketches and parodies before finding herself in the spotlight in 2000 after spending a year as SNL’s first female head writer.
Now one of the biggest names in comedy, Fey continues to wow audiences with her exceptional talents as an actress, writer and producer with appearances in blockbusters like Baby Mama, Date Night and Sisters. She is also the mastermind behind television hits 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as well as the 2004 film, Mean Girls. With her talents widely rewarded with 119 award nominations and 47 wins, the multitalented superstar has earned nine Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and five Screen Actors Guild Awards, to name a few.
Beyond her accolades and critical acclaim, Fey is also raking in the dough with a net worth averaging around $70 million and her annual salary ranging between $8 million and $10 million. To put things into perspective, the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot star was making top dollar during her seven-year stint on 30 Rock as she brought in over $500,000 per episode as the show’s creator and executive producer. Add in the fact that she’s starred or appeared in nearly three dozen television shows while working as a writer on 17 others and there’s no question the 46-year-old comedian has the cash to prove it!
With plenty of money in the bank, Fey can definitely afford to splurge and does so on occasion, but she hasn’t let her fortune and fame get to her head especially when it comes to her home. Riding the heels of SNL and in the midst of her 30 Rock success, Fey and her husband, pianist and musical director Jeff Richmond, made the move to New York City’s Upper West Side when Fey purchased a stunning apartment for $3.4 million in 2009.
Instantly drawn to the historic 13-story building and its full-time doorman, private garage and convenient location, Fey didn’t think twice about purchasing the three-bedroom flat. Offering floor-to-ceiling windows and stunning city views, the apartment is truly exquisite with hardwood floors, a massive master suite, powder room and plenty of living space. But, what truly steals the show, is the heart of the home—Fey’s breathtaking kitchen, which is complete with chef-grade appliances and an adjacent dining hall with enough room to comfortably seat 20 guests.
Moving beyond the spacious dining room to the butler’s quarters and into the impressive library with 17-foot bookcases, Fey has invested a small fortune in renovating and redecorating the home to ensure it reflects her and her family’s needs and style. She hasn’t, however, stopped there. Earlier this year, the actress truly flexed her spending muscles when she forked over $9.51 million for the 10-room condo directly upstairs that boasts four bedrooms and four and a half baths. With the home move-in ready and reflecting Fey’s decorating tastes, rumor has it she plans to transform the space into a two-story duplex.
With her already lavish New York City apartment and her recent purchase, there’s no denying that Fey has developed quite a taste for the finer things in life. But, if you’re not convinced, a quick look at her wardrobe should do the trick. Once called the “thinking man’s sex symbol” by Rolling Stone, Fey has come a long way from her childhood of hand-me-downs as she often hits the red carpet in brands like Alberta Ferretti, Gucci and Zac Posen. Hey, it’s all part of the job!
Even with fortune and fame, Fey has managed to stay humble by making a conscious effort to help those in need. Over the years, she’s donated thousands of dollars to organizations like Stand Up to Cancer, the Red Cross, Love Our Children USA, Mercy Corps and Autism Speaks. Frequently praised for her philanthropy, Fey continues to set an outstanding example for her daughters and women around the world.
