When you think of “cool” actors, one of the first that has to come to mind is Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson has been in some of the biggest films of all-time, with his career really starting to take off in the 1990s. Jackson also happens to have one of the longest lasting marriages in Hollywood, as he’s been married to actress LaTanya Richardson since 1980.
You might know Richardson from her work in the 1990s in films such as “Malcolm X”, “Sleepless in Seattle” and “U.S. Marshals”. Lately, she’s been in television shows such as “Blue Bloods”, “Luke Cage” and “Grey’s Anatomy”. Meanwhile, Jackson’s recent film credits include playing Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Kong: Skull Island” and “The Hateful Eight”.
Two years into their marriage, Jackson and Richardson welcomed their only child, a daughter named Zoe, who was born on March 28, 1982. From a very young age, it was clear that Zoe was her father’s daughter, as she was a spitting image of the famous actor. Right from the get go, Zoe would accompany her parents as they would start to get more and more film roles during the 90s, meeting some of the most famous people in Hollywood while also learning the ins and outs of the business.
One of Jackson’s earliest memories came from hobnobbing with celebrities while growing up in the business. “I was about three years old when my parents took me to a party. And this kind of Albert Einstein looking dude scooped me up and ran away with me,” she said. “And my mom was like, ‘OK, some strange man has my child. That’s fine, I guess.’ And this woman comes up there and she’s like, ‘Oh, that’s my husband, Kurt. He’s very lovely. Don’t worry about it, he loves kids.’
“And I ended up hanging out with this bizarre dude for, like, three hours at this party and it ended up being Kurt Vonnegut. All I remember about it is this guy having a lot of really interesting, strange jokes. I thought it was cool because I ended up as an adult reading all of these Kurt Vonnegut books and being very excited about it. So when my parents reminded me of what had happened, I got really excited.”
Unfortunately, another thing that Jackson would have to do in her younger years was make sure that her father was getting on the right track. It wasn’t until the early 1990s when a then nine year old Jackson watched her father go through struggles with addiction. At one point, Samuel had been in his home with drugs surrounding his body, with his daughter and wife there to see.
Since 1991, Jackson has abstained from any addictive substances, saying that seeing his daughter when he woke up was the day that changed his life. Receiving a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, Jackson said that “The other two people that challenged me on a regular basis are my foundation and support, my daughter Zoe and my wife LaTanya.”
He went on to say “The two women that actually found me passed out on the floor after I left somebody’s bachelor party and put me in rehab the next day. And supported me and pushed me and give me a reason to get up and go and chase it day after day after day...It’s been a great ride getting here, as there are a couple people very instrumental in that.”
Zoe herself has gotten in front of the screen just once, appearing as “Fred’s Girlfriend” in the 2007 film “Too Saved”. For the most part, though, Jackson has appeared behind the scenes, spending the last several years as a producer. Since 2014, Jackson has worked as a producer in four different “Top Chef” series, including “Top Chef, Jr.” and “Top Chef Duels”. She’s also worked on “All-Star Academy”, and in 2018 became the supervising producer for the series “Sugar Rush”.
As you can see, it’s the cooking shows that have been a keen interest for Jackson, with the latest being a baking competition. In her latest series, which premiered in July 2018, four teams compete to make two cakes on Netflix, with the winner taking home $10,000. The show received some heavy promotion, proving to be a success for the streaming network.
Because of her lengthy resume as a producer, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the 36 year old Jackson have the same type of acting career that her father has had. Still, Jackson has plenty of connections in show business and will likely continue producing for years to come. She’s worked in reality television as well as sports to this point, and will keep seeing her resume lengthen over time.
If Jackson does want to get into acting, she has her work cut out for her to catch her father in terms of box office numbers. As it sits, Samuel L. Jackson films have grossed more than $5.7 billion worldwide, with an average of around $77.5 million per film. That sets him more than $750 million ahead of Harrison Ford in second place, and “Avengers” co-star Robert Downey, Jr. in third.
